Butchering Accents
This is my opinion. Please do not throw a bitch fit because you get offended or disagree with what you read. The world is not ending, you are not dying, and quite frankly I don’t even care. So please enjoy but lets not be immature. Thank you.

Is butchering an accent really worth the crap you’re going to get from it? Honestly, how important is it to you that your character have an accent? Well if you’re doing a terrible job it obviously means you didn’t do any research at all. Accents in writing are not to be discredited in fact they can  be brilliant but when you fucking tear them to pieces it’s insulting to the people who really do have those accents. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Listen to people who have those accents and don’t overwrite them. To be frank it all comes down to ignorance. If you are so ignorant to think that say everyone in the U.K sounds like the freaking Queen you’re wrong. Again it all comes down to research, when trying to write and accent you need to look at the region because (using Britain as an example again) There is a difference between accents in Northern England and in Southern. These are things you need to know. If you are writing in a different time period you need to look at class. Upper class often spoke with a different accent than those of lower classes. Education could even come into play if you are going to be accurate and detailed. Choosing and doing research on the accent is almost as important as doing the actual writing.
When actually writing them don’t try and put the accent into every fucking word. No. Just stop right there. It does not work for every word and once you choose an abbreviation or certain written way for a word you better write it like that every time. Also if I can’t read or understand what your character is saying that completely defeats the purpose of the dialogue. Make sure people understand what you’re trying to say! Otherwise don’t even bother with an accent. Especially in the roleplaying environment, accents really are not necessary.
I also want to add in a tid bit about slang. If you are going to use slang make sure it’s up to date!! You look like an idiot when you use slang that no one in their right mind would use.
Lastly I want to show you what good accent writing is versus terrible:
Example of good: Hagrid from Harry Potter
"A wizard, o’ course," said Hagrid, sitting back down on the sofa, which groaned and sank even lower, "an’ a thumpin’ good’un I’d say, once yeh’ve been trained up a bit. With a mum an’ dad like yours, what else would yeh be?”
J.K Rowling does a fantastic job of not only making his accent readable but it also plays a role in his characterization.
Mark Twain is another example of an author who makes good use of writing accents.
Example of bad: Taken from some fanfiction
"Ye sayin’ that fowk cannae mak’ oot whit Ah’m sayin’? Whit’s wrang wi’ the way Ah’m sayin’ whit ah’m sayin’?"
Well it’s pretty self explanatory ..I don’t know about you but it took me a while to get what this actually said.
